Blush Basics: 5 Tips for Creating Long Lasting, Beautiful Blush

You’ve heard the phrase “blushing beauty” right?  No doubt it came from a woman with perfectly applied blush!  You can be that blushing beauty, so let’s go back to basics and talk about how.  Blush can make or break your look; but how do you make sure it perfectly accents the rest of your makeup instead of stealing the focus?  Try these five tips for applying perfect, long lasting blush.

  1. Apply it last
Blush should always be a graceful transition from your eyes to your lips, so apply it last.  If you’re wearing bold lips and a neutral eye, you’ll want to apply blush that is half way between the two on the intensity scale.  Going for an au natural look?  Only a subtle sweep of blush is necessary, but sweep on an extra layer if you’re wearing bold red lips and a smokey eye.
  2. Layer up for long lasting wear
If you have a long day or don’t want to worry about reapplying your blush, apply it in layers.  Use a cream and a powder blush to insure your cheeks stay pink all day.  After applying your foundation or tinted moisturizer, start with a cream blush (like Maybelline’s Bouncy Blush) and apply it on the apples of your cheeks using your fingers or your Contour Kabuki from your Beautiful Expressions Kabuki Set.  Next, on top of the cream blush, sweep a similar colored powder blush on top with your traditional Blush Brush.  This way, if the powder blush wears off, you’ll still have the cream blush creating color.  Two is truly better than one.
  3. Buff in your color
A great way to insure you don’t skimp on color is to over apply and then tone it down.  Apply a touch more blush than you normally would, and then take your Buffing Brush and blend it into your cheeks using small circular motions until you see the effect you’d like.
  4. Contour with a blush, bronzer duo
If you want to add a little dimension to your look, use a blush and bronzer duo.  You can purchase a pre-mixed combo like Physician’s Formula Happy Booster that goes on with a single sweep of your brush.  Or construct your own look by pairing your favorite blush with your favorite bronzer.  Apply the bronzer color first: suck your cheeks in and sweep a lite shade of bronzer in the indentation with your Bronzer Brush, then sweep your blush on the apples of your cheeks.  Blend the two together with your Blush Brush if necessary.
  5. Use more than one color
When we blush naturally, it’s usually not all one color, so don’t try to recreate that natural glow with only one shade of pink.  We like a blush that has a slew of peaches, pink, and nudes all mixed together.  If you can’t find a pre-made palette you like, don’t be afraid to make your own.  You can also collect shattered eye shadows for blush as well!  It’s a great way to use up the leftover bits of your favorite shadows too.
