Living Beautifully: Summer Sun Protection

Summer is almost officially here and that means it’s time to start thinking seriously about sunscreen!  We all know to wear sunscreen all year, but when summer days get longer and we spend more time outside, it’s even more important to slather up!  Consider this your summer sunscreen 101.

First thing’s first, picking out a sunscreen: When you’re looking for a sunscreen, you’ll want to buy one labeled noncomedogenic says Dermatologist Meghan O’Brien, M.D.  “It’s the simplest way to avoid the fragrances and thick consistencies that irritate and clog pores,” she says.  If you have sensitive skin, try choosing a mineral sunscreen that list zinc oxide or titanium dioxide as active ingredients.  Both of these ingredients can be less likely to cause irritation than traditional sunscreens.  Good Housekeeping magazine recommends Kiss My Face Natural Mineral Sunscreen with an SPF of 40, available at your local Whole Foods.

The second step is protection: Make sure you’re applying enough product.  Most people don’t apply enough sunscreen for it to be effective.  Glamour Magazine says “to get the level of SPF you see on the label, you have to spread the lotion on like a layer of vanilla frosting; that’s the thickness used in Food and Drug Administration tests.  The average person?  They only apply a quarter of that amount and only 21% of people reapply sunscreen.  So make sure to apply generously and reapply every two hours.  If you’re sweating or swimming, it’s best to reapply hourly.  If you need help remembering, there’s an app for that!  Check out Coppertone’s My UVAlert for reapplication reminders and sun tips.

In regards to makeup, built in SPF in your makeup is great, but don’t rely on that alone.  If you’ll be spending the day outside, make sure to put on some traditional sunscreen as well.  When applying sunscreen in the morning, make sure it goes on before your makeup.  If you choose a mineral sunscreen, it can go on after makeup.  Some people like using sunscreen instead of moisturizer, but you can still apply moisturizer on top of sunscreen if you choose.
